Technology Management

Welcome
I2T2 report cover

Technology plays an increasingly significant role in the instructional process, communication process, and, also in managing the business aspects of the 5th largest public school system in Minnesota.

The Technology Management Department provides a broad spectrum of planning and support services that allow staff, student, and, parents to communicate via voice, video, and, computer data connections that include the Internet, e-mail, cable TV-channel, and, the school systems own internal network (Intranet).

Instruction is supported with over 7,000 networked student (and non-student) computers in classrooms, offices, Media Centers, computer labs, and mini-labs. Wireless access points are being installed in all buildings to provide access to mobile users. Video delivery systems include TV’s (and TV Cable) in every classroom, and, in-house TV channels for students to author live and pre-recorded video programming.

Over 150,000 e-mails a day arrive at our e-mail system. The district web page and site web pages are hosted on servers maintained by the network support staff. Parents are now able to log into the ParentView system and see current information about how their student(s) are doing. The school system continues of provide greater amounts of information to parents (and the community at large) through our web pages.

All students and employees have access to the data system, with unique logins and storage space on our Storage Area Network. All sites are interconnected and connected to the outside world through district-owned fiber optic cable. The data server system hosts a wide variety of instructional and management software packages. Software installation, anti-virus, and security files are all ‘pushed’ electronically (to computers) from centralized systems. All district libraries are stored on a single system, and are shareable on the Internet.

The Technology Management Division assists with a wide variety of management functions, including video surveillance, keyless entry, environmental controls, telephone/voicemail systems, data backup/restore systems, food service transaction systems, and data archive systems.

Through the District Technology Coordination Committee, Technology Operations Committee, site Technology Partnerships, and other internal committees, we provide leadership for systematic and organized change, while maintaining standards for network security, data privacy, and user support.

Our goal is that voice, video, and data systems be easy to access (and operate); that they support district goals, and are available 24x7x365.
