Osseo Area Schools is dedicated to contributing excellence to future educators. Student teaching is considered to be the most important experience in the teacher preparation program. Colleges/Universities

Requests will be submitted to the school district via Google documents.

Requests are processed according to the date received and placements are limited.  Due to the high volume of requests we receive, please be patient while students materials are processed for consideration. Submission of materials for student teaching does not guarantee a placement. Confirmation will be sent to the University/College Coordinator with placement information.

Institutions interested in a contract with ISD 279, please contact Human Resources.

Placements other than student teacher placements:

  • Observations and Practicums less than 40 contact hours – placed directly by school principals.
  • Counseling Interns – Students who are candidates for counseling internships will be interviewed by a team of counselors and offers made to individuals who meet the requirements of the schools requesting intern placements. Students interested in pursuing an internship opportunity should send his/her resume with intern requirements to the Assistant Director for Student Services before March 15 to request an interview.

Sometimes student teachers experience circumstances that are beyond their control. If a student teacher is unable to fulfill their assignment for any reason, the school district will not accept an alternate student teacher. Each student teacher candidate will be considered a new applicant for placement and processed in the order received.

Student Teacher Candidates 

Students interested in placement within our district will need to ensure that their college/university contacts our placement coordinator. We do not make placements directly with students. 

Osseo Area Schools requires individuals working in the district to have a background check. All student teaching placement offers are contingent on a completed satisfactory background check. Only background checks processed through Osseo Area Schools, within 90 days of assignment, will be accepted.  A student teacher who does not receive this clearance is ineligible for a student teaching experience in the school district.

A college/university student, who is placed in the schools to complete an observation or practicum for less than 40 contact hours, will follow the site process for a background check.   

It is imperative that student teachers maintain the highest standards of honor, integrity, morality and consideration in their personal behavior. It is the responsibility of each student teacher to be informed and honor all district and school policies. The assigned cooperating teacher and school administrator will recommend resources for review.

Each student teacher brings to the experience a unique combination of teacher characteristics and skills. The student teaching experience provides the teacher candidate with opportunities to analyze, evaluate and modify the teaching practice to maximize professional growth. The student teacher is expected to:

  1. Submit to a background check by completing a human resources background check form.
  2. Attend the Osseo Area Schools’ Orientation Session for Student Teachers.
  3. Read and abide by the policies and procedures as outlined in the assigned school’s handbook and the school district website.
  4. Exchange contact information with the cooperating teacher and provide the school secretary with contact information.
  5. Request a school handbook, seating charts, schedules, floor plans of the building, and other needed materials from the cooperating teacher.
  6. Conference with the cooperating teacher regarding placement, assignments and requirements.
  7. Plan lessons consistent with principles learned in education courses. Confer with the cooperating teacher about proposed plans, and allow for sufficient time to make suggested revisions.
  8. Notify the cooperating teacher in the event of an absence.
  9. Participate in school-related activities with the cooperating teacher, including faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, parent teacher conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  10. Keep the cooperating teacher informed about any unusual incidents that happen when he or she is out of the classroom.
  11. Understand that while student teachers are expected to do the lesson planning and teaching as if they were the classroom teacher, the cooperating teacher is officially responsible. Anything that student teachers do in the classroom must have the approval of the cooperating teacher. Cooperating teachers have the right and obligation to make decisions that they believe are in the best interests of the students. Any decisions that the cooperating teacher makes will be final.
  12. Demonstrate appropriate interactions with students, families and staff at all times.
  13. Dress appropriately and professionally at all times.
  14. Maintain reliable attendance and arrive on time.

At the completion of the student teaching experience, the student teacher candidate will complete an evaluation that provides Human Resources feedback on their experience, as we endeavor to continually improve our process.

Osseo Area Schools reserves the right to deny a student teaching opportunity to an applicant who is not qualified, for whom there is no teacher candidate position available, or for whom no cooperating teacher is available. We also reserve the right to remove a teacher candidate at any time from the classroom or a district program when deemed to be in the best interests of the teacher candidate, our students, or the school district.

Cooperating Teachers 

If there is one consistency in the literature about student teaching, it is that the cooperating teachers are the single most significant factor in the quality of student teachers’ experience.

Each spring, Human Resources will send out a survey to each continuing contract teacher to determine who has an interest in serving as a cooperating teacher for the following school year.  Once names have been collected, Principals will review and submit recommendations to Human Resources.

To host students for practicum or observation, less than 40 contact hours, teachers must have one or more years of teaching experience, be licensed in the area requested, and secure the approval of their supervisor or Principal. 

To host teacher candidates for student teaching, more than 40 contact hours, cooperating teachers must have 3 or more years of teaching experience in the district, be on continuing contract, be licensed in the requested area, secure the approval of their supervisor or Principal and have a desire to serve in a mentor role.
