A MESSAGE FROM DR. PERDAEMS

A warm welcome to all of our students and their families for school year 2008/2009! We would also like to welcome two new staff members to OSH this year; both of them coming to us from Park Center. Sandy Buechel is our Social Worker and Heather Klug joins our World Language department as a Spanish teacher. Ms. Klug will also be directing our Fall Musical again this year. See Page 3 for more information about the musical.

This edition of the Flier is packed with information to help you have a successful start to the new school year, including orientation sessions, locker selection/assignment, schedule distribution, parking, etc. Complete handbook information is printed in the Student Planner/Handbook that is distributed to all students the first week of school during Advisory.

The orientations are listed below, students must attend on the date scheduled for their grade level or attend the make-up session. Orientation begins in the auditorium promptly at 8:00 AM with a welcome by the administration – students will not be admitted if they arrive late, so please make sure they are on time. They will then be divided into small groups to meet with the Counselors, Activities Director, and Administrative Assistants for important information about high school and ways to make it a great year. Pictures will be taken during one of the rotations and students will also receive their tentative first trimester schedules. As always, parents/guardians are welcome to attend with their student.

Important News about Student Schedules: As a result of the district’s need to reduce the budget by $16.3 million, Osseo Senior reduced teaching staff in several areas, including Art, Business Education, Cooperative Education, English, Family & Consumer Science, Social Studies and Technology Education. The flexibility to change schedules and add classes will be extremely limited. In some cases, students may have study halls due to lack of available seats in classes.

The second and third pages of the Flier include important calendar dates for the upcoming year - every activity and event we have scheduled to date is listed. Please note days off, planned events (conferences, concerts, plays), and report card distribution. Page four of the Flier is the new daily schedule we will be using this year. The same schedule will be used every day of the week. One significant change this year - the warning bell is being eliminated. Seniors should be sure to check out page 8 for information that is ‘just for seniors’ and sophomores should check out page 15 for some special information just for them.

Classes begin on Tuesday, September 2. We are looking forward to greeting over 1600 students again this fall, which includes 500+ incoming sophomores. All students will pick up their final schedule in the morning before school. Schedules will be distributed from 7:10 to 7:30 AM. Faculty will be at tables in the following locations, each with schedules for part of the alphabet: seniors in the Cafeteria, juniors in the East Gym and sophomores in the Main Gym. At 7:30, students will go to Advisory, which will be followed by a Pepfest to kick off another great year at OSH!
