rush creek destination imagination team the six smartiesAfter getting a taste of international Destination Imagination (DI) competition for the first time last year, “The Six Smarties” from Rush Creek Elementary capped another impressive season with a third place finish at the 2019 DI Global Finals in late May.

Competing against 65 other teams from across the U.S. and around the world, The Six Smarties impressed the judges in the Improv category at the elementary level. Laura Thompson, Rush Creek’s talented and gifted teacher and DI coach, said the result was a wonderful surprise.

“We were all shocked when we heard their name called for third place,” she added. “We were the only team from Minnesota to medal in the elementary through secondary divisions, and the whole Minnesota team section gave us a standing ovation.”

The Six Smarties—made up of team members Isabel Bauerly, Makayla Elkins, Madelyn Good, Sydney Manning, Mady Nash and Emma Roach —were victorious at their regional competition and placed in the top three at the state tournament earlier this year to qualify for Global Finals.

Osseo Area Schools was well represented at this year’s DI Global Finals, as another Rush Creek team—“Super 7 Sensations”—placed 20th in the Improv category. “Gentlemen Boys,” made up of students from Maple Grove Middle School, placed 39th in the Improv category at the middle level.
